The export of air purifier increased 8 times in half a year

Overseas, from April to November 2020, China's air purifier export orders increased by nearly 800% year on year, and the total GMV increased by more than 900% year on year. After the full resumption of domestic production and work, the transfer of orders from overseas manufacturers has also made China the absolute center of global manufacturing for air purifiers, and even the small home appliance industry, and even the entire home appliance industry.

01 Purify the air or kill the virus?

The high demand for air purifiers in China can be said to have gradually emerged with the vigilance of smog and the discussion of PM2.5.

Therefore, domestic air purifiers have relatively mature technologies in removing particulate matter, including dust, pollen, smoke, and PM2.5.

On the other hand, consumer demand for air purifiers to purify the air pollution caused by indoor decoration is also increasing day by day. In terms of dealing with the formaldehyde problem, the current domestic air purifiers still lag behind the international leading level.

When it comes to the sharp increase in sales of air purifiers caused by the epidemic, it is a pity that most of them are paying for a "heart comfort", because there is no real "virus-killing" air purifier.

Coincidentally, so-called "anti-coronavirus" air purifiers have also been available abroad.

For example, Molekule, an air purifier manufacturer in San Francisco, also launched a flagship product priced at US$799 in early 2020. The selling point is that it "can effectively kill the new crown virus."

However, whether Gree or Molekule, the effective elimination of the new crown virus is only in the laboratory environment.

On the one hand, its anti-virus effect has not obtained extensive authoritative certification. On the other hand, the effect of using an air purifier to "anti-virus" in a home environment may not be as effective as opening windows for ventilation.

According to the World Health Organization's official website on the prevention and control of the new crown virus, the document shows that opening doors and windows to maintain air circulation is one of the effective preventive measures, but at present, it seems that most families still feel that it is safer to close the doors and windows and turn on the air purifier.

The contradiction also arises from the issue of "opening the window."

Regarding the two keywords of COVID-19 and window opening, the most searched question on the Internet is "Can I still open the window when the neighbor is isolated at home?"

The answer to this question is never absolute. The answer that authoritative experts can give is only "under normal circumstances, opening windows for ventilation will not cause viruses to float in and cause indoor infection."

However, with the number of people infected by the new crown virus worldwide, I am afraid that no one would still think that being infected is a small probability event.

Although air purifiers cannot be completely replaced, they can effectively replace windows and purify indoor air.

This is also the reason why air purifiers that cannot be sterilized have also been favored by countless families. At the same time, I also believe that most consumers who buy air purifiers do not expect it to be "anti-virus" at all.

02 Small appliances, big wave

The export volume of air purifiers has increased by almost 8 times, which is only the representative and epitome of the hot export of China's small household appliances in 2020.

Small household appliances in the kitchen and small household appliances with functions of sterilization, disinfection, and cleaning have all ushered in a bumper harvest of overseas orders in 2020.

According to the "Report on the Third Quarter of China's Home Appliance Industry in 2020", in the third quarter of 2020, the subdivided functional products such as air fryers, meat grinders, and coffee machines generally increased by more than 30%.

AliExpress, AliExpress' cross-border retail e-commerce platform, saw a year-on-year increase of 20% and 14% in visits to Spain and Italy during the epidemic.

The representative of "Western-style small home appliances"-coffee machines are the star single products of the "House Home" on the platform. Among them, the domestic coffee machine brand Hibrew's sales rose by nearly 100% in April last year.

It is precise because of this that the third-quarter financial reports of small home appliance companies are also more eye-catching. Small home appliance companies such as Xinbao, Xiaoxiong Electric, Beiding, and Stone Technology have all achieved double growth in revenue and net profit.

Regarding the sustainability of growth, people in the industry generally believe that after the overseas epidemic is effectively controlled, the overseas demand for small appliances will not be reduced, but will maintain a high boom due to the guidance and cultivation of life and consumption habits.

In terms of other kitchen appliances, in the first seven months of 2020, China's exports of refrigerator products to the United States increased by 83.1% year-on-year, and exports of microwave ovens and electric ovens also increased by about 17% year-on-year.

In Asian countries with close cooking habits, such as Japan, the export value of refrigerators has increased by more than 100% year on year, and the export value of induction cookers has also increased by more than 65% year-on-year.

In fact, the largest source of home appliance imports from the United States, the European Union, Japan, South Korea, and other countries has always been China.

In 2019, more than 40% of U.S. home appliances are imported from China, 50% of EU home appliances are imported from China, and 66% of Japanese home appliances are imported from China.

In November last year, the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (RCEP) signed by China, Japan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, and the ten ASEAN countries has become the world’s largest The most influential trade agreement.

The landing of RCEP is also an important pillar that supports domestic appliances going overseas and the healthy operation of the industrial chain. The popularization of parts production and standardized processes will also make domestic home appliances in line with the international leading level in terms of technological innovation and performance.

Although China's home appliance export tariffs are not high, RCEP has a little marginal impact on home appliance exports in the short term, but it must be positive for the industry in the long run.

It can be said that when the global market is already relatively dependent on China’s home appliance exports, the stagnation of overseas home appliance production or OEMs caused by the new crown epidemic has promoted the growth of domestic home appliances’ share in the world market on the one hand, and on the other hand, It has spurred the rapid growth of domestic home appliances in terms of technological innovation, quality, and performance.
